Adventure comes to life

The Indian in the Cupboard (1995) is an American fantasy film based on the children’s book of the same name by Lynne Reid Banks concerning a young boy who discovers that his toys are developing lives of their own, which presents him with unexpected responsibilities. Omri (Hal Scardino), a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, receives an odd variety of presents for his birthday: a wooden cabinet from his older brother, a set of antique keys from his mother Jane (Linsday Crouse), and a tiny plastic model of an Indian from his best friend Patrick (Rishi Bhat). Putting them all together, Omri locks the Indian inside the cabinet, only to be awoken by a strange sound in the middle of the night. Omri opens the cabinet to discover that the tiny Indian has come to life; it seems that he’s called Little Bear (Litefoot), and he claims to have learned English from settlers in 1761. Omri hides this remarkable discovery from his mother but shares it with Patrick; as an experiment, Patrick locks a toy cowboy into the cupboard, and soon Little Bear has a companion, Boone (David Keith), though predictably, the cowboy and the Indian don’t get along well at first. Omri comes to the realizations that his living and breathing playthings are also people with lives of their own, and he begins to wonder how much control he should really have over their lives. The Indian in the Cupboard was directed by Frank Oz, best known as one of the original puppeteers for The Muppets and the voice of Miss Piggy.

Onward Promotions will be presenting the popular heavy metal band, Skid Row, in Akron, OH at the Akron Civic Theatre on August 2nd of 2012. Skid Row has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. The concert will open with a performance by the all female rock band, 11After. Tickets will be available on Ticketmaster.com and the Akron Civic box office.

In 1987 SKID ROW was born in a garage somewhere in Toms River, N.J. Like a bastard child of a thousand maniacs, they relentlessly pounded the New Jersey club circuit; packing houses wherever they performed.

Fast forward to 1989. SKID ROW’s debut album goes on to sell over 5 million copies in the U.S.A., along with a tour that takes them around the world.

1992 the band releases their second record “SLAVE TO THE GRIND” which debuts at #1 on the Billboard charts, making them the first Heavy Metal/Hard rock band to do so. “Slave” rockets to multi-platinum status. This is also followed by a massive world tour.

In 1995 band relationships severely strain, but they reluctantly go into the studio to record what was thought to be their final release “SUBHUMAN RACE”. Soon after, the band parted ways. That was until late 1999 when founding members Rachel Bolan, Scotti Hill, and Snake Sabo decided that SKID ROW meant far to much to them let the music fade into rock obscurity. There were changes to be made – the question was “who”. Enter Texan singer Johnny Solinger. Suggested through a mutual friend the band visited Johnny’s website and were immediately interested in what they heard. A few e-mails later and the singer was on a plane to N.J.

“He had a quiet confidence about him when he walked through the front door” says guitarist Snake. Rachel adds “We knew he was the guy half way through the first song of his audition. Johnny fit the bill to a “T”. Great voice, great attitude and was clear on what the band was about”.

If they thought things couldn’t get better, they did. In 2000 SKID ROW landed the coveted opening slot on the KISS “Farewell Tour”. The tour of tours. It brought SKID ROW's music back to the hungry masses. Since then the band has logged a few hundred thousand bus miles and some hundreds of shows during which the band was busy writing new songs for their CD “Thickskin” that was released in 2003. That album put SKID ROW's past in perspective and future in place.

In 2006 SKID ROW put the final touches on their CD “Revolutions Per Minute” and released it on SPV Records. This reunited Skid Row with producer and long time friend Michael Wagener who produced their first two records.

The band is playing and touring all over the world in 2012.

Opening for Skid Row in Akron will be the all female rock band, 11AFTER, Akron's very own “Bad Girls of Rock n' Roll”. The band has three independently produced CDs and two videos under their studded belts. This five-female-force of dynamic talents are well known for their tightly woven and loosely flowing sound throughout their diverse array of original music recordings and popular live shows.

D Cruise, lead singer/songwriter, is the driving force behind this amazing act and draws on her unique life experiences for both her lyrics and her incredible performing presence. Her raspy growl, radio-ready tunes and wild stage antics combine for the ultimate ‘rock chick’ experience. The line up further consists of Cyn Smith, a jaw-dropping lead guitarist who has shared the big stage with a number of major acts from across the country. Newest bad girl Natalie "Nasty" Morgan is a high powered bass player that brings her own style of pumping energy. Drummer extraordinaire June pounds out the backbone and guitarist Christina Crago, formerly of local girl band legend Level C, rounds out the sound with her own style. Individually unique and collectively together a strong music experience beyond compare.

11After has extensively toured across the U.S. and and on the east coast in particular. They have seasoned their sound locally at Cleveland’s House of Blues, for years at Akron’s biggest summer party ‘Live at Lock 3’ and many other venues, dive bars and clubs too numerous to mention.

The Akron Civic Theatre is one of the true gems of Akron. Long recognized among the community’s cultural landmarks, the Akron Civic Theatre has a rich and spectacular history. It has provided the community with a venue for quality entertainment and live performances for over seventy years. During that time, hundreds of thousands of people have been thrilled by various theatrical presentations, both on stage and on screen.

The theater was built in 1929 by Marcus Loew and designed by famed theater architect, John Eberson. The interior structure was fashioned after a Moorish castle featuring Mediterranean decor, including medieval carvings, authentic European antiques and Italian alabaster sculptures.

Among facilities of its size, the Civic is one of only five remaining atmospheric theaters in the country where patrons experience a twinkling star-lit sky and intermittent clouds moving across the horizon, all while sitting inside the auditorium.
